The itSkill Aptitude Test

The aptitude test was originally designed as a way to assist in recruiting graduates who would be trained as software testing consultants, when I worked for SIM Ltd in Woking, Surrey. After I left SIM I redesigned it from scratch, as the copyright of the first version rightly belonged to SIM. The new version was adapted to free download from the internet. It attracted great interest from people all over the world who were interested in joining the IT industry and wanted to kow their aptitude. Various websites provided links to it and possibly some still do. None had asked permission to link in the first place, so it was not within my control to tell them when the facility was withdrawn.

People in general assumed that the marking of tests was automated, which would obviously have been easier. However, the entire principle of the test was that it required marking by hand, as it helped the evaluator draw up an individual profile of that person's temperament in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. Marking someone's test results took up to 45 minutes, sometimes longer, depending on the formality of the report required. Despite the considerable interest in the test, few were prepared to pay enough to justify the time spent marking. Sometimes, if I felt so inclined, I would mark tests free. But since then I have not had the time, so reluctantly, when I restarted the website from scratch a while ago, I withdrew the test.
